Chapter 13 - Corporate Restructuring

On Monday morning, I walked into the glass-walled corner office of my corporate consultancy firm, Miller Restructuring Partners.
My lead attorney, Marcus Vance, was already waiting inside with a hot cup of coffee and a thick leather folder.
"You certainly know how to burn down a kingdom, Emma," Marcus said with an appreciative smirk, sliding the folder across my desk.
"They brought the matches, Marcus," I replied, taking a sip of coffee. "I just stopped playing firefighter."
Marcus opened the folder. "I’ve already filed the formal petition for dissolution of marriage based on irreconcilable differences, financial fraud, and domestic assault. We’ve also filed an emergency freeze order on all joint marital assets."
"Does he have access to anything of mine?" I asked sharp-eyed.
"Not a single penny," Marcus assured me firmly. "Your prenuptial agreement was a masterpiece. Every dollar you earned through Miller Restructuring is legally walled off inside your pre-marital corporate trust. Daniel’s legal team called my office an hour ago trying to claim 'spousal support' based on his lifestyle expectation over the past three years."
I laughed out loud. "He wants spousal support from the money I gave him out of pity?"
"I sent his lawyer the recorded statements showing you were floating their family debts out of your personal funds, along with the draft forgery document," Marcus said with a grin. "His lawyer went completely quiet and admitted they have zero leverage."
"What about the criminal battery charge against Vivian?"
"The local prosecutor reviewed the 911 audio and your medical report showing bruised knees and scraped hands," Marcus explained. "They are pressing forward with misdemeanor battery. Vivian Mercer has a formal court arraignment next month."

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the city skyline. For the first time in four years, the heavy weight on my shoulders was completely gone.
I was no longer dragging an entitled family up a mountain. I was standing on top of it alone.
