Chapter 10 - Midnight In The Mansion

The moment the words "formal charges" left my mouth, the dining room devolved into absolute chaos.
"Hang up that phone!" Vivian shrieked, lunging forward again, but her own brother held her back by the arms. "Are you insane?! You can't bring the police into this house!"
"Ma'am, I am dispatching a unit to your location right now," the 911 dispatcher said calmly over my phone's speaker. "Are you in a safe location?"
"I am stepping outside to wait by my vehicle," I replied into the phone, keeping my eyes locked on Daniel. "The attacker is my mother-in-law, Vivian Mercer. There are multiple witnesses."
I ended the call, tucked my phone into my coat, and picked up my bag.
"Emma, please!" Daniel dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor where I had been thrown moments earlier. "Don't do this to us! If the press gets wind of a domestic call at the estate, my mother's reputation will be ruined!"
"Her reputation was built on my money, Daniel," I said, stepping past him. "She can pay for her own public relations from now on."
As I walked toward the grand front foyer, my phone buzzed in my hand with a series of automated security alerts from my financial dashboard.
The cancellations I had initiated ten minutes ago were already taking effect.
ALERT: Transaction Declined - Mercer Estate Main Gate Service Fee.
ALERT: Account Frozen - Vivian Mercer Auxiliary Black Card.
ALERT: Lease Agreement Terminated - European Auto Finance.
Behind me, in the dining room, I heard Vivian's cell phone chime loudly with a text notification. A second later, she let out a blood-curdling scream.

"My card!" she screeched from the dining room. "She turned off my card! Daniel, do something!"
I opened the heavy mahogany front doors of the Mercer mansion and stepped out into the crisp, cold night air. The heavy door clicked shut behind me, severing the life support of the Mercer empire forever.
