Chapter 30 - Shadows in the Parking Garage

|

Three weeks later, the dust had begun to settle.

I had successfully absorbed Mercer Logistics into my parent company, Miller Restructuring Partners. I restructured the shipping firm's debt, hired a brilliant new chief operating officer, and expanded our routes into the Midwest.

It was a cold Tuesday evening around 8:00 P.M. I walked out of my downtown office building and took the elevator down to the private underground parking garage.

The garage was dimly lit, echoing with the distant hum of ventilation fans. My heels clicked against the concrete as I walked toward my white Porsche SUV.

As I reached into my bag for my keys, a shadow suddenly detached itself from behind a massive concrete pillar.

"Emma."

I spun around instantly, pulling my pepper spray from my coat pocket and pointing it directly at the figure.

"Step back!" I commanded sharply.

The man stepped into the yellow overhead light.

It was Daniel.

He looked unrecognizable. His clothes were filthy and torn, his face was covered in dark stubble, and his left eye was swollen shut, surrounded by deep purple bruising—the clear mark of the Chicago loan sharks catching up to him.

"Emma... please," Daniel begged, taking a limping step forward, holding his hands up in a desperate gesture. "Don't shoot. I just need five minutes. Just five minutes."
