Chapter 20 - An Unexpected Knock

|
A year after the night I was knocked onto the marble floor, my life had achieved a sense of total, blissful perfection.
It was a quiet Sunday evening. I was sitting on my plush grey sofa in my penthouse, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, reviewing a new corporate acquisition file on my laptop while soft jazz played in the background.
My phone chimed with a private email notification from an encrypted address.
I opened the message. Inside was a single PDF attachment, accompanied by a brief message:
“Emma, you did a thorough job cleaning up the Mercer accounts. But you missed the offshore trust registered in the Cayman Islands under your ex-husband's middle name. It was activated three days before you canceled the domestic transfers.”
I frowned, my heart skipping a rhythm.
I opened the attached bank statement. Displayed at the top was an active offshore holding account under the name Daniel Edward Mercer.
Current Balance: $2,400,000.00.
I stared at the screen in complete disbelief. Daniel had spent three years pretending to be penniless, begging me for money, while secretly stashing millions in a hidden offshore account left behind by his father.

I could digest the information, my penthouse door intercom chimed softly.
I stood up, stepping over to the wall monitor.
The security camera in the private elevator lobby showed a tall, sharp-looking man in a tailored dark suit. He wasn't Daniel, and he wasn't a process server. He held a sleek leather briefcase and looked directly into the camera lens with a calm, knowing expression.
He pressed the intercom button.
"Mrs. Miller," the man's smooth voice echoed through the speaker. "My name is Julian Vance. I am the executor of your late father-in-law's original, unedited primary trust. We have a severe problem regarding Daniel's offshore accounts, and you are the only person legally authorized to unlock the final clause."

I stood in the quiet hallway of my penthouse, looking at the glowing screen.
My finger hovered over the intercom button as the rain began to beat against the glass windows of the city, holding the key to a secret that was just beginning to unfold.
