Chapter 2 - The Illusion of Royalty

Sitting on the cold floor, looking up at the Mercer family, I suddenly saw them for what they truly were.
To the outside world, the Mercer family was old-money royalty. They owned a sprawling historic mansion, drove European luxury cars, and frequented exclusive charity galas. But behind closed doors, their grand empire was nothing more than a hollow cardboard house waiting for a light breeze to knock it down.
When Daniel’s father passed away three years ago, he left behind a chaotic mess. The family’s real estate portfolio was bleeding money, two of their primary residences were heavily mortgaged, unpaid property taxes were mounting, and personal debts threatened to drown Vivian’s lavish lifestyle.
At the time, Daniel had come to me crying. He begged me to help his mother save face.
As a senior corporate restructuring consultant, fixing broken financial situations was what I did for a living. I loved my husband, so I stepped in quietly.
I restructured their suffocating high-interest loans.
I negotiated payment plans with hostile creditors.
I paid their overdue property taxes directly from my own accounts.
I even set up an automatic monthly support transfer from my corporate income to keep Vivian from losing this very mansion.
Every time a bill was cleared, Vivian told her relatives that Daniel had “saved the family business.” She bragged at dinner parties about her brilliant, capable son.
I never corrected her. I didn’t care about the credit or the applause. I just wanted my husband to feel supported, and I wanted peace in my home.

In return, Vivian treated me like an outsider who had been lucky enough to marry into her pristine bloodline. She constantly dropped subtle insults about my modest background and reminded me to be grateful for the Mercer name.
I had tolerated it for three long years. But watching my husband stare at the floor while his mother stood over me on her marble tiles, something inside me snapped. The quiet, dutiful wife died right then and there.
