Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Ruin

|

The room erupted into quiet whispers as the family members began looking at each other in shock.

“For thirty-six months,” I said, clicking onto my personal corporate ledger, “I transferred funds from my private restructuring firm directly into the Mercer support account. Every single month, without fail.”

I highlighted the bottom line figure and zoomed in.

Total Personal Contribution from Emma Miller: $312,450.00.

“Three hundred and twelve thousand dollars,” I read aloud. “I paid for your groceries. I paid your property taxes. I paid for the very silk dress you are wearing right now, Vivian. I did it because I loved your son, and I believed he was an honest man.”

Vivian grabbed the back of a dining chair, her knuckles turning white as she tried to process the information. “No… no, Daniel said he was managing his father’s portfolio! He said he was the one bringing in the revenue!”

I looked at my husband, feeling a cold, hollow pity for him.

“You lied to your own mother, didn’t you?” I asked him quietly. “You let her believe you were a financial genius so she would keep treating you like the golden child. And you let her treat me like a servant so she wouldn't discover the truth.”

Daniel looked up, tears welling in his eyes. “Emma, please… I was trying to protect her pride! If she knew we were broke, it would have destroyed her!”

“So you decided to destroy me instead?” I asked, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. “You sat there and watched her push me to the floor tonight. You told me to apologize to her while I was paying for her entire life!”

“You married into this family!” Vivian suddenly shrieked, snapping out of her shock and lunging toward the sideboard. “You owe us! It’s marital property! You can’t just stop paying!”

“Actually,” I smiled, opening another folder on my desktop, “I can. And I did.”
