Chapter 19 - The Phoenix Rises

Six months after the trial, my life looked entirely different.
Without the financial drag of the Mercer family draining my resources, my firm, Miller Restructuring Partners, expanded rapidly. I landed three major corporate accounts, opened a secondary office in Chicago, and was named one of the top female executives in the region by a prominent business magazine.
I bought a stunning penthouse apartment overlooking the river, decorating it with warm light, modern art, and zero mahogany furniture.
My home was filled with peace, safety, and true freedom.
One evening, I ran into my former aunt-in-law, Patricia, at a charity event downtown. She approached me hesitantly, holding a glass of white wine, looking genuinely remorseful.
"Emma," Patricia said softly. "I just wanted to apologize for how I acted at that dinner party. I was blind to what Vivian was doing. None of us knew you were carrying that family on your back."
"Thank you, Patricia," I replied gracefully. "I appreciate you saying that."
"If you're curious," Patricia added in a lowered whisper, "Daniel moved to a small town two hours away. He's working as an entry-level bank teller, living in a one-bedroom rental. Vivian is living in a government-subsidized senior apartment complex. She’s currently doing her community service hours cleaning kitchen trays at the soup kitchen."
I listened to the update without feeling joy or malice. They had simply harvested the exact seeds they had sown.

"I wish them both peace," I said, taking a sip of my wine. "I really do."
I walked away from Patricia, joining my real friends near the floor-to-ceiling windows, laughing as the city lights glittered below.
