Chapter 9 - Echoes of the Past

In a small, dimly lit community center on the other side of the city, Andrew sat behind a battered metal desk. He was reviewing a stack of eviction notices for a struggling family.

His tailored suits were long gone, replaced by simple, practical clothes. His face carried the deep lines of a man who had lost everything and was painfully aware that he deserved it.

He took a sip of cold coffee and glanced at the small television mounted in the corner of the room.

The local news was playing.

"Escalante Global faces major legal hurdles today," the news anchor announced. "Billionaire developer Victor Vance has filed a massive lawsuit against Mariana Escalante's charitable foundation, claiming environmental code violations on the proposed Hope Village site."

Andrew stopped reading. He stared at the screen.

Footage of Mariana walking out of a courthouse flashed across the television. She looked strong, resolute, and incredibly beautiful.

A heavy ache settled in Andrew's chest. He had spent the last year trying to forget the life he threw away. He had spent it trying to be a better man, offering free legal aid to the vulnerable, trying to balance the karmic scales.

"Is that your old boss?" a young legal intern asked, noticing Andrew's intense focus on the screen.

"Something like that," Andrew murmured.

He knew exactly who Victor Vance was. During his days of corporate fraud and ruthless ambition, Andrew had crossed paths with Vance. He knew the man’s tactics. Vance didn't just sue; he fabricated evidence, bribed officials, and destroyed lives to get what he wanted.

Andrew pulled out his old, worn laptop and opened a hidden encrypted file he hadn't touched in over a year. It was a database of shady corporate dealings he had compiled before his downfall—a kind of insurance policy he never got to use.

He typed Victor Vance's name into the search bar.

Dozens of files populated the screen. Shell companies, illegal political contributions, bribery schemes.

Andrew stared at the glowing screen. He had sworn to stay out of Mariana's life forever. He knew his presence would only bring her pain. But he also knew that Victor Vance would not stop until Escalante Global was destroyed.

"I have to help her," Andrew whispered to the empty room.
