Chapter 6 - The Architect of Hope

The morning sun hit the glass windows of Escalante Tower.
Mariana sat at her massive wooden desk, looking over a set of detailed blueprints. They were not for a new corporate office or a luxury hotel. They were for "Hope Village," a massive housing and rehabilitation community designed for survivors of domestic abuse.
It was her most ambitious project yet.
A knock on the door broke her concentration.
"Come in," she called out.
David walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. He was an architect, but not the kind who cared about building monuments to billionaires. He built spaces that healed people. He was also the man who had quietly, steadily won her heart over the past year.
"You're here early," David said, setting a warm cup in front of her.
"There is a lot of work to do," Mariana replied, smiling up at him. "The zoning board is trying to push back on the community center location."
David leaned comfortably against the edge of her desk.
"They always push back, Mariana. But they haven't met someone as stubborn as you yet."
"Is that a compliment?"
"It is the highest compliment I can give."
Mariana looked at the blueprints again. She remembered the days when her entire life was controlled by Andrew and Margaret. She remembered feeling like the walls were closing in, like she had no voice and no future. Now, she was literally building walls to protect others.
"I want this to be perfect, David," she said softly. "These women... they need to know they are safe. They need a place where no one can ever tell them they are worthless."
David reached out and gently touched her hand. His hands were calloused from working on construction sites, rough but incredibly warm.
"They will feel it," he promised. "Because every inch of this place is designed with your heart."
Mariana looked into his eyes. There were no hidden agendas with David. He didn't care about the Escalante fortune. He cared about the woman who had survived the fire and emerged stronger.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"For what?"
"For seeing me. Just me."
May you like
David smiled.
"That is the easiest thing in the world to do."
