Chapter 21 - Breaking Ground

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the grand opening ceremony of Hope Village.
It was no longer just a blueprint on David’s desk. It was a sprawling, beautiful campus. There were rows of safe, modern townhomes, a massive community center, a childcare facility, and lush green gardens.
The area was filled with hundreds of people. Survivors of abuse, community leaders, and foundation staff mingled together, celebrating a monumental victory.
Mariana stood on a wooden stage, looking out at the crowd.
She wore a simple, elegant blue dress. She didn't wear expensive jewelry or carry designer bags. She was exactly where she wanted to be, exactly who she wanted to be.
"When we started this project," Mariana spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying across the quiet crowd, "people told us it was impossible. They said the land was too valuable. They said the obstacles were too great."
She paused, looking down at David, who was smiling up at her from the front row.
"But we knew something they didn't," she continued. "We knew that the value of this land is not measured in dollars. It is measured in the lives that will be rebuilt here. It is measured in the children who will sleep safely tonight."
The crowd erupted into applause.
"Hope Village is not just a collection of buildings," Mariana said, her voice filled with emotion. "It is a promise. A promise that no matter how dark your past has been, you always have the right to a safe, beautiful future."
She stepped down from the podium as the crowd cheered loudly.
David was waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs. He wrapped his arms around her waist and spun her around, laughing brightly in the sunshine.
"You did it," David whispered in her ear. "You actually did it."

Mariana rested her forehead against his, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin.
"We did it," she corrected him.
