Chapter 19 - The Fall of an Empire

The fallout was immediate and catastrophic for Victor Vance.
Within twenty-four hours of the press conference, the federal authorities raided Vance Global's headquarters. Agents carried out dozens of boxes of hard drives and financial ledgers.
The city council members who had taken Vance's bribes resigned in disgrace, facing their own federal indictments. The corrupted zoning board was completely overhauled.
Mariana watched the news from the comfort of her living room, a warm cup of tea in her hands.
The news anchor looked grave.
"Victor Vance was arrested early this morning at his private estate. He is facing multiple counts of racketeering, bribery, and wire fraud. He was denied bail, citing a high flight risk."
David walked into the room and sat on the sofa beside her, wrapping a warm blanket around her shoulders.
"It's over," David whispered, kissing her temple.
Mariana leaned her head against his shoulder, letting out a breath she felt she had been holding for a month.
"The corporate sponsors called my assistant this afternoon," Mariana said, a soft smile playing on her lips. "They are not only restoring their funding... they are doubling it. They want to be associated with the foundation more than ever."
"Because you fought back and won," David said proudly. "You showed everyone that Escalante Global is untouchable."
Mariana looked at the television screen as they showed footage of Victor Vance being led away in handcuffs. She felt no joy in his downfall, only a profound sense of relief.
She had protected her foundation. She had protected the women and children who were depending on her.
"Tomorrow, we resume construction," Mariana said, looking up at David. "I want the framing for the community center finished by the end of the month."
David laughed, pulling her closer.

"You are a relentless boss, Mrs. Escalante."
"I have to be," she smiled. "We have a village to build."
