Chapter 28 - The Ghost of the Past
Late that evening, exhausted and anxious, Elena visited her parents’ sprawling country estate. The house was remarkably warm and inviting, providing a stark contrast to the cold, sterile, and unforgiving environment of the corporate tower she had just left. Mariana and David were outside in the twilight, peacefully tending to a row of blooming blue hydrangeas. When Mariana saw her daughter’s tense posture and deeply furrowed brow, she immediately put down her gardening shears, sensing the heavy burden.
"You have that exact look, Elena," Mariana said gently, wiping the dirt from her hands onto an old cotton towel. "The one you always get when you’re trying to solve a complicated puzzle with missing pieces."
Elena sighed heavily, taking a seat on the cold wrought-iron bench beneath the old oak tree.
"We have a massive security breach at the Foundation, Mom. Money has been siphoned directly out of the philanthropic reserve. It was done quietly, expertly. Whoever orchestrated this knew our internal digital systems significantly better than our own IT department."
David, still holding a heavy metal watering can, frowned deeply at the alarming news.
"Are you absolutely sure it isn’t just a banking error? Those international wire transfers can be notoriously finicky and prone to delays."
"Marcus confirmed it was a deliberate, malicious routing," Elena explained, staring blankly at the stone pathway. "It feels like a message. A warning shot across the bow to test my leadership."

Mariana sat closely next to her daughter, wrapping a comforting, maternal arm around her tense shoulders.
"When I took over, the enemies were loud, arrogant, and visible. Today's enemies are vastly different. They hide like cowards behind heavy encryption and anonymous proxies. But you are brilliant, Elena. Do not panic. Let them believe they have the upper hand, and then you trap them."
