Chapter 18 - The Press Conference
The federal indictment against Victor Vance was unsealed on a Thursday morning.
Instead of hiding behind her lawyers, Mariana decided to face the world head-on. She organized a massive press conference on the steps of Escalante Tower.
The plaza was packed with hundreds of journalists, cameras, and local citizens.
Mariana stood at the podium, wearing a sharp white suit. David stood directly behind her, a silent pillar of strength. To her right, looking uncomfortable but resolute, stood Andrew.
"For the past month, my foundation has been the victim of a vicious, coordinated smear campaign," Mariana began, her voice echoing powerfully through the microphones. "We were accused of fraud, of corruption, of greed."
The crowd was completely silent, hanging on her every word.
"These lies were fabricated by one man: Victor Vance," she continued, looking directly into the main television cameras. "Mr. Vance attempted to illegally seize the land designated for Hope Village. When I refused to sell, he resorted to bribery, blackmail, and media manipulation."
A reporter shouted from the front row.
"Mrs. Escalante! What proof do you have?"
Mariana gestured to Andrew.
"The evidence of Mr. Vance's illegal bribery networks has been handed over to the federal prosecutor. It was provided by Andrew Escalante, former CEO of this company."
Flashbulbs erupted like a strobe light. The press was shocked to see Andrew standing beside the woman he had so publicly wronged.
Andrew stepped up to the microphone. He looked at the sea of cameras, knowing this moment would define his life forever.
"I am here today to confirm that I provided the documents exposing Victor Vance," Andrew stated clearly. "I am also here to publicly confess my own past wrongdoings, and to state, unequivocally, that Mariana Escalante is a woman of absolute integrity. She represents the best of this city. Victor Vance represents the worst."

Mariana watched Andrew as he spoke. She saw the genuine remorse in his eyes, the heavy burden of guilt he carried. She didn't forgive him for the past, but in that moment, she finally respected him.
"Hope Village will be built," Mariana concluded, stepping back to the microphone. "Because fear and corruption will never conquer truth and compassion."
