Chapter 20 - Final Closure

The next afternoon, Mariana asked her driver to take her to the community legal clinic in the poorer district of the city.
She walked inside, ignoring the stares of the staff who recognized her from the television. She found Andrew in his small office, packing a cardboard box.
"Are you leaving?" Mariana asked from the doorway.
Andrew looked up, surprised to see her.
"Yes," he said, offering a small, sad smile. "The federal prosecutors offered me a plea deal for my cooperation. I am going to serve a short sentence in a minimum-security facility for my past financial crimes. It is the right thing to do."
Mariana stepped into the room. She looked at the man she had once feared, the man she had once hated. All of that anger was gone now, replaced by a quiet sense of closure.
"You saved the foundation, Andrew," Mariana said sincerely. "You saved Hope Village."
Andrew shook his head.
"I just gave you the tools, Mariana. You are the one who stood up and fought. You are the one who built the empire."
He picked up his box and walked toward the door.
"I just wanted to say goodbye," Andrew said, stopping a few feet away from her. "And to say, for the last time... I am truly sorry for everything I did to you."
Mariana looked into his eyes. The apology was real. The transformation was complete.
"I know you are," Mariana said softly. "I forgive you, Andrew. Not for you. But for me. So I can finally move on."
A tear slipped down Andrew's cheek. He nodded slowly, accepting her words like a priceless gift.
"Goodbye, Mariana."
"Goodbye, Andrew."

She watched him walk out of the clinic, stepping into the busy city streets. He was no longer a billionaire. He was no longer powerful. But for the first time in his life, he was free.
Mariana turned and walked back to her car. The past was finally, completely behind her.
