Chapter 24 - The Leather Purse

A year into their marriage, Mariana and David were sitting in her large executive office at Escalante Tower.

The foundation had expanded across the country, opening three new branches of Hope Village in different states. Mariana was now universally recognized as one of the most influential philanthropists in the world.

David was sitting on the sofa, sketching a new design for a children's library, while Mariana finished signing a stack of grant approvals.

She put her pen down and stretched her arms, letting out a satisfied sigh.

"All done?" David asked, looking up from his sketchbook with a warm smile.

"For today, yes," Mariana replied, standing up and walking over to the wooden shelf near the door.

She reached out and gently touched the old, worn brown leather purse that still sat there on display.

David watched her fondly. He knew exactly what that purse meant to her.

"Do you ever think about the day you left the mansion with that bag?" David asked softly.

Mariana turned around, leaning against the shelf.

"Sometimes," she admitted. "I think about how terrified was. I thought I was walking away with nothing. I thought my life was over."

She smiled, looking around the beautiful, bustling office, and finally letting her eyes rest on her husband.

"But I wasn't walking away with nothing," Mariana continued. "I was walking away with my dignity. I was walking away with my soul."

David stood up, walked over to her, and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close.

"And look what you built with it," he whispered, kissing her forehead.

Mariana rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.

"I kept the purse to remind me to never become like them," she said quietly. "To never let money or power blind me to the things that actually matter."

"You never could," David promised her. "Your heart is too big."
