Chapter 36 - Mariana’s Counsel

Before launching her aggressive counter-offensive, Elena knew she desperately needed the wisdom of the woman who had fought and won these exact types of corporate wars. She drove back to the country estate as the sun began to rise, painting the sky in vibrant shades of pink and gold. She found Mariana awake, sitting quietly on the veranda with a steaming cup of herbal tea, watching the morning mist slowly roll off the expansive green lawns.
"You didn't sleep at all, did you, my darling?" Mariana observed softly, taking in Elena’s rumpled suit and the deep, dark circles under her eyes.
"We found the leak, Mom. It was Julian," Elena admitted, the lingering sting of the personal betrayal evident in her tired voice. "He was blackmailed by a group called the Vanguard Syndicate. Someone known only as 'The Architect' hired them to destroy the Foundation’s reputation."
Mariana’s expression darkened instantly, a flash of her formidable past self surfacing in her sharp eyes. She set her porcelain teacup down on the table with a firm, decisive click.
"The Vanguard Syndicate are ruthless, highly paid mercenaries. They do not operate on personal grudges; they operate strictly on massive financial incentives," Mariana analyzed quietly. "If this 'Architect' has the capital to hire them, he is not a ghost from Margaret's old inner circle. He is someone with current, massive resources. Someone who views our philanthropic dominance as a direct threat to his own business interests."

"How did you do it, Mom?" Elena asked, sitting down heavily. "How did you fight these monsters without losing your own humanity in the process?"
Mariana reached out and squeezed her daughter’s hand firmly. "You do not fight them with their weapons. You fight them with absolute truth. You find out what The Architect is desperately trying to hide, and you expose it to the world."
