Chapter 27 - A Shadow in the Numbers
The executive boardroom was filled with the familiar, stern faces of the Foundation's most trusted and experienced advisors. Elena took her seat at the head of the long table, offering everyone a polite but undeniably firm smile. The morning's agenda was supposed to be completely routine: reviewing quarterly financial reports, approving charitable allocations, and discussing a new green-energy initiative planned for the southern industrial district. However, halfway through the financial presentation, the Chief Financial Officer, Marcus Thorne, suddenly hesitated, clearing his throat nervously.
"Is there a problem with the projections, Marcus?" Elena asked, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the polished table, her eyes locking onto his.
Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking incredibly uncomfortable under her intense scrutiny.
"Well, Ms. Escalante, there is a minor, yet concerning, discrepancy in our offshore accounts. It’s highly likely just a glitch in the automated transfer system, but a sum of roughly two million dollars seems to have been redirected without proper authorization."
Elena’s eyes narrowed instantly, the atmosphere in the room dropping several degrees.
"Redirected to where, exactly?"
"That is the strangest part of the anomaly," Marcus replied, typing rapidly on his laptop to project the encrypted financial data onto the main screen. "The funds were routed through a highly complex series of anonymous shell companies before completely disappearing into a blind trust based in the Cayman Islands. The digital trace simply ends there."

"I want a full internal audit immediately," Elena ordered, her voice cutting sharply through the rising noise. "Nobody outside this room hears about this until we know exactly what we are dealing with. Find that money."
