Chapter 22 - The Architect's Proposal

Later that evening, after the crowds had gone home and the campus was quiet, Mariana and David walked through the central garden of Hope Village.

The pathway was lined with soft, glowing lanterns. The air was peaceful, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine.

They walked hand in hand, enjoying the profound silence of a battle finally won.

"It feels surreal," Mariana murmured, looking at the illuminated community center. "To see it actually standing here."

"It is beautiful," David agreed, stopping near a small stone fountain in the center of the garden.

He turned to face her, his expression suddenly growing serious.

"Mariana," he said softly, taking both of her hands in his.

"What is it?" she asked, seeing the nervous energy in his eyes.

"When I first met you, I thought you were just another wealthy executive," David began, his voice rough with emotion. "But then I watched you fight. I watched you bleed for people you didn't even know. I watched you build a sanctuary out of your own pain."

Mariana felt her heart begin to race.

David reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out a massive velvet box. He pulled out a simple, beautifully carved wooden ring box.

He dropped to one knee on the stone path.

"I don't have a corporate empire," David said, looking up at her with absolute adoration. "I don't have billions of dollars. But I have a heart that belongs entirely to you. I want to spend the rest of my life building things with you. Healing things with you."

He opened the box. Inside was a beautiful, modest ring, crafted with an elegant, understated diamond. It wasn't meant to show off wealth; it was meant to show devotion.

"Mariana Escalante," David asked, his voice trembling slightly. "Will you marry me?"

May you like

Tears spilled over Mariana's eyelashes, but they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She had known false love, forced love, and toxic love. This... this was true.

"Yes," she whispered, pulling him up to his feet. "Yes, David. A thousand times, yes."
