Chapter 10 - The Unlikely Meeting

The rain fell heavily against the windows of the local coffee shop. David sat at a corner table, reviewing structural engineering reports for Hope Village. The lawsuit had halted construction, and every day of delay cost the foundation thousands of dollars.

The bell above the door chimed.

A man walked in, shaking the rain from his coat. He looked tired, his shoulders slumped with the weight of invisible burdens. He ordered a black coffee and turned around.

David recognized him instantly. He had seen the old photographs in the foundation's archives.

It was Andrew.

Andrew walked toward the seating area and stopped when he saw David looking at him. For a moment, the two men just stared at each other.

"You are David," Andrew said quietly, stepping closer. "The architect."

"And you are Andrew," David replied, not offering his hand. His voice was protective, guarded. "What are you doing in this part of town?"

"I work at the legal clinic two blocks away."

David raised an eyebrow. The idea of the disgraced, money-hungry Andrew working at a free legal clinic seemed absurd.

"I'm not here to cause trouble," Andrew said, sensing David's hostility. "I know Mariana is dealing with Victor Vance."

"That is none of your business," David said firmly. "Mariana can handle herself."

"I know she can," Andrew agreed, his voice laced with genuine respect. "She is the strongest person I have ever met. But Victor Vance doesn't play by the rules. He will forge documents. He will pay off the judges. He will ruin the foundation."

David closed his laptop.

"And why do you care?"

Andrew looked down at his coffee cup.

"Because I spent years destroying her life. I spent years taking things from her. I want to do one good thing for her before I disappear completely."

Andrew reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick yellow envelope. He placed it on the table in front of David.

"What is this?" David asked suspiciously.

"It is proof of Vance's illegal bribery networks," Andrew explained. "It proves he is paying the city council to block Hope Village. Give it to Mariana's lawyers. Tell them to look at the offshore routing numbers."

Andrew turned to leave.

"Wait," David called out. "Why don't you give it to her yourself?"

Andrew stopped at the door, looking back with profound sadness.

"Because the last thing she needs is to see my face."
