Chapter 7 - The Shadow of Greed

The board meeting that afternoon was supposed to be a standard review of the quarter's charitable allocations. Instead, it became a battleground.

Mariana sat at the head of the long mahogany table, listening as Marcus, the chief financial officer, nervously cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Escalante," Marcus began, avoiding her gaze. "We have received an unsolicited acquisition offer for the prime real estate currently slated for Hope Village."

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"That land is not for sale, Marcus. It is already zoned for the foundation."

"I know," Marcus said quickly. "But the offer is from Vance Global. Victor Vance is willing to pay three times the market value. He wants to build a luxury commercial complex there."

Mariana felt a cold knot form in her stomach. Victor Vance was a notorious corporate raider. He was a man who destroyed communities to build glass towers for the elite. He represented everything she had fought to purge from the Escalante empire.

"My answer is no," Mariana said firmly. "Tell Mr. Vance that Escalante Global is not interested in his money."

An older board member, Richard, spoke up.

"Mariana, with that kind of capital, we could fund ten other projects. It is a fiduciary responsibility to at least consider the offer."

Mariana stood up. Her presence commanded the room instantly.

"Our responsibility is to the people we promised to help," she stated, her voice echoing off the walls. "Hope Village stays exactly where it is. The women and children in that neighborhood need it there. They do not need to be pushed out to the margins of the city so Victor Vance can sell thousand-dollar lunches."

"Victor Vance does not take no for an answer," Richard warned.

"Neither do I," Mariana replied coldly.

"He is known for playing dirty, Mariana. If you reject this, he will come after the foundation."

Mariana picked up her files. She looked around the table, meeting the eyes of every board member. She had fought her way out of a marriage built on lies and manipulation. She was not going to be intimidated by a corporate bully in a tailored suit.

"Let him try," she said. "Meeting adjourned."
