Chapter 70 - Unshatterable Peace

|

The house was perfectly quiet on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I sat comfortably in my spacious home office, looking out the large bay window at the lush, blooming garden Marcus and I had planted together. The rain tapped a gentle, soothing rhythm against the glass, washing the world clean. A hot cup of Earl Grey tea rested on the oak desk beside my laptop.

I took a deep, centering breath, letting the absolute tranquility of the moment settle deeply into my bones.

It had been a year since the book was published. A year of chaotic book tours, massive clinic expansions, and endless media interviews. But today, there were no cameras. There were no desperate legal letters, no screaming ghosts from the past, and no battles left to fight.

The war was entirely, permanently over.

Marcus walked into the office, carrying a fresh plate of warm cookies. He set them quietly on the desk and stepped behind my leather chair, gently massaging my shoulders, perfectly easing away the lingering tension of a busy week.

"Thinking about the next book?" he asked softly, kissing the top of my head.

"No," I smiled brilliantly, turning my chair to look up at the incredible man who loved me unconditionally. "I think I have said exactly what I needed to say. Right now, I am just thinking about how incredibly beautiful this silence is."

I looked around the beautiful room. The framed New York Times Bestseller list hung proudly on the wall. Photographs of my thriving, happy children lined the bookshelf. My clinic was saving lives every single day.

I absolutely wasn't a victim. I totally wasn't just a survivor.

I was Rachel Bennett. I was a woman who had walked through the absolute depths of hell, refused to burn, and emerged from the ashes holding a blazing torch.

"You built a beautiful life, Rachel," Marcus whispered, looking at me with an ocean of love in his dark eyes.

"We built it," I corrected him, reaching up to rest my hand against his warm cheek.

I looked back out the window at the rain falling on the beautiful, deeply rooted flowers in our garden. I took one final, deep breath, feeling a massive weight completely lift from my soul. This highly beautiful, incredibly hard-won, fiercely protected life was entirely, unconditionally, and completely mine.
