Chapter 24 - Beyond the Grave|

The massive First Fidelity Bank in downtown Chicago was an imposing, impenetrable fortress of polished marble and heavy brass. Marcus and I walked confidently through the revolving glass doors the very next morning, flanked aggressively by two of his heavily armed security personnel who waited discreetly in the busy lobby. I approached the head vault manager, officially presenting the silver key, the laminated card, and the legally binding death certificate and probate documents I had retained from my marriage to Daniel, firmly establishing me as the sole executor of the remaining estate.
The nervous manager led us deep into the sterile, heavily armored underground vault room. The thick walls were lined with thousands of small, identical metal doors. He precisely located the box matching the numbers on Caroline's card, inserted his master key with a loud clack, and then stepped back, allowing me to insert the silver key.
The ancient lock clicked smoothly. I pulled the long, heavy metal drawer completely out and carried it to a private, soundproof viewing room, setting it down gently on the polished wooden table. Marcus locked the heavy door securely behind us.
My hands were shaking violently as I opened the metal lid of the box.
Inside, there was absolutely no stacked cash. There were no hidden diamonds. There was only a thick, black leather-bound journal and a incredibly small, highly encrypted black USB flash drive.
I carefully picked up the heavy journal and opened it to the very first page. The handwriting was elegant, highly deliberate, and undeniably Caroline's.
If you are reading this, I am already gone, the first heartbreaking line read. And if you are reading this, it means Richard and Daniel have finally pushed too far. I successfully secured the children's trust, but the rest of the cartel blood money is documented here. Do not ever give it back to Elias Thorne. Use it to entirely destroy him.
"She knew," I whispered, hot tears finally pricking my eyes. "She knew exactly how dangerous these men truly were, and she brilliantly built a trap for them from beyond the grave."

Marcus picked up the USB drive, examining it closely in the harsh, bright overhead light. "This is a military-grade, heavily encrypted drive. It will easily take my best tech guy a few hours to crack it, but I guarantee you, the exact routing numbers for the fifty million dollars are safely on this drive."
"Then let's get to work," I said, carefully and reverently placing the journal into my leather bag. "It's time to take Daniel's absolute only leverage and violently turn it against him."
