Chapter 37 - The Clinic's New Intern

|

Sophie’s decision to spend her final summer before college working at the Caroline and Rachel Heart Center was a gift I hadn't dared to anticipate. The clinic had grown massively over the past two years, transforming from a small, hopeful practice into a highly respected, bustling nonprofit facility that provided top-tier cardiac care for women. Walking through the pristine, brightly lit corridors with Sophie by my side felt like a profound full-circle moment.

"I've assigned you to the patient advocacy department," I told her, handing her a freshly printed ID badge that bore her name.

"Patient advocacy? Not just filing paperwork in the back room?" Sophie asked, her eyebrows shooting up in genuine surprise.

"Filing is important, but you have a gift for making people feel heard, Sophie. Just like your mother Caroline did. Our patients often come to us after being dismissed or ignored by other doctors. They need someone who will listen to them with genuine empathy before they even see a physician."

Over the next few weeks, I watched my daughter flourish in ways that brought tears of absolute pride to my eyes. She didn't just sit behind a desk; she actively engaged with the women in the waiting room. She held the hands of nervous elderly patients, fetched water for stressed mothers, and listened to their stories with a maturity that far exceeded her eighteen years.

One afternoon, I stood quietly by the reception desk, watching Sophie comfort a woman who had just received a difficult diagnosis. Sophie’s posture was steady, her voice incredibly gentle but firm with reassurance.

"She is absolutely remarkable," Marcus whispered, coming up behind me and resting his warm hands on my shoulders.

"She is," I agreed, leaning back into his comforting embrace. "Daniel tried so hard to break her spirit, to mold her into a quiet, compliant accessory. But he failed. She is fierce, Marcus. She is completely unbroken."

"She had a pretty incredible role model to show her how to fight back," Marcus murmured, kissing the top of my head.
