Chapter 21 - Shadows at the Doorstep|

I didn't tell Sophie about the terrifying cartel threat immediately. I didn't want to paralyze her with fear during the most important academic year of her life. But I did stubbornly insist on driving her to school myself the very next morning, falsely claiming my car was in the shop for repairs and I desperately needed to use her Volvo. She complained loudly, as any normal teenager would, but the subtle, reassuring presence of the discreet black SUV following closely behind us—Marcus's elite security team—allowed me to finally breathe.
A few tense days later, Ethan came home early for the Thanksgiving break. Walking excitedly through the front door, he dropped his heavy duffel bag and wrapped me in a massive, crushing hug. He had grown significantly taller, his shoulders much broader, and the dark shadow of trauma that used to haunt his bright eyes had significantly faded away.
"It smells absolutely amazing in here," he said, taking a deep, appreciative breath of the roasting turkey. "Where’s Sophie?"
"She's upstairs in her room studying for finals," I said, forcing a cheerful, entirely fake smile onto my face.
But Ethan was far too perceptive for my lies. He pulled back slowly, studying my face carefully. He immediately noticed the deep, dark circles under my tired eyes and the highly nervous way I kept glancing out the front window at the quiet street.
"Mom. What's going on?" he asked, his voice instantly dropping to a serious, protective octave. "There's a black SUV permanently parked across the street. It’s been sitting there since I pulled up in my Uber, and the guy inside is actively watching our house."
I sighed heavily, realizing with absolute certainty that I couldn't protect them by keeping them completely in the dark. Not anymore. They were nearly adults, and they had a fundamental right to know the extreme dangers currently surrounding their own family.
"Call your sister down here," I told him gently, pointing to the stairs. "We urgently need to have a family meeting in the living room."
When Sophie and Ethan were seated together on the sofa, looking deeply concerned, I sat across from them and laid out the terrifying, unvarnished truth. I told them everything about Julian Vance, Elias Thorne, and the highly menacing phone call from their father. I watched their young faces transition rapidly from confusion to profound shock, and finally, to a hardened, fierce resolve that perfectly mirrored my own.

"So Daniel is still desperately trying to ruin us from inside a maximum-security prison cell," Ethan summarized bitterly, clenching his fists in anger.
"He's trying," I corrected him firmly, reaching out to hold both of their hands. "But he will absolutely fail. We are going to find exactly what your mother hid, and we are going to end this nightmare once and for all."
