Chapter 50 - The Empty Nest

|
August arrived with a bittersweet, inevitable finality. It was officially time to pack Sophie up and move her into her college dormitory across the state.
The driveway was chaotic. Marcus was expertly playing a high-stakes game of Tetris, trying to fit a dozen massive cardboard boxes, a mini-fridge, and entirely too many throw pillows into the back of his SUV. Ethan was carrying out the last of Sophie's heavy bags, teasing her relentlessly about packing her entire shoe collection.
"I absolutely need all of them, Ethan!" Sophie argued loudly, playfully swatting her brother with a rolled-up poster. "You never know what the weather will do!"
The drive to the sprawling university campus was filled with loud music, nostalgic stories, and nervous laughter. When we finally arrived and hauled everything up to her third-floor dorm room, reality suddenly struck me like a physical blow.
My beautiful, brilliant girl was actually leaving.
After hours of unpacking, organizing, and making the tiny bed, it was finally time to say goodbye. We stood in the busy dormitory parking lot, the afternoon sun beating down on us.
Sophie hugged Ethan tightly, whispering something in his ear that made him laugh and tear up simultaneously. Then, she turned to me.
She threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder, holding on with a fierce, desperate strength.
"Thank you, Mom," Sophie cried softly into my shirt. "Thank you for saving us. Thank you for giving me a chance to have a real life."

"You saved me too, sweetheart," I whispered back, kissing her hair while tears streamed down my face. "Go be brilliant. I am always, always right here."
Marcus and I drove back to the city alone. The house was incredibly quiet when we walked through the front door. The empty nest was daunting, but it was also a profound testament to our ultimate success.
