Chapter 51 - Reclaiming the Date

|

As the early autumn leaves began to turn brilliant shades of red and gold, a very specific date loomed on the calendar. October 14th. The exact anniversary of the horrifying incident at Gate 42.

For years, as the date approached, I would suffer from terrible nightmares. My body would vividly remember the absolute terror, the sheer panic of Daniel’s ultimate betrayal, and the desperate, frantic flight to protect Ethan and Sophie from his destruction.

But this year, I firmly refused to let the date hold any dark power over me.

I sat in my spacious office at the clinic, holding a massive stack of formal invitations. I had made a bold, executive decision.

"Are you entirely sure you want to host the fundraiser on that specific day, Rachel?" my clinic director asked gently, fully aware of the dark history associated with the date.

"I am absolutely positive," I stated firmly, signing the final approval form with a swift flourish of my pen. "Daniel wanted that day to be the absolute end of my life. He wanted to completely erase me. Instead of hiding from the memory, I am going to publicly reclaim it."

We were organizing the First Annual Caroline and Rachel Heart Center Charity Gala. We rented out the grand ballroom of the city’s most prestigious hotel. The goal was to raise two million dollars to fully fund the pediatric wing’s new surgical equipment.

I was going to take the darkest, most traumatic day of my entire existence and deliberately transform it into a massive, undeniable triumph. I was going to use the exact anniversary of his attempt to destroy me to actively save the lives of hundreds of innocent children. The ultimate, beautiful revenge was massive, unshakeable success.
