Chapter 46 - Midnight Whispers

The old grandfather clock in the hallway softly chimed two in the morning. The entire house was completely silent, but my mind was racing with a million chaotic, joyful thoughts. Tomorrow was my wedding day.
I slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Sophie, who had insisted on having a massive "slumber party" in my room for my final night as a single woman. I tiptoed softly down the wooden stairs to the kitchen, desperate for a cold glass of water to soothe my dry throat.
When I flipped on the dim kitchen light, I gasped. Marcus was sitting quietly at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of chamomile tea.
"You aren't supposed to see the bride before the ceremony," I whispered playfully, walking over to him.
"Technically, the sun hasn't come up yet," Marcus chuckled softly, pulling me gently onto his lap. "Couldn't sleep?"
"Not a chance," I admitted, wrapping my arms comfortably around his neck. "My mind is running a marathon. I keep thinking about how incredibly different this feels from my first marriage. I was so utterly terrified back then. I felt like I was walking directly into a prison."
Marcus kissed my forehead, his touch incredibly grounding and safe.
"You are never going back to a prison, Rachel. Not emotionally, not financially, not ever," he promised fiercely. "Tomorrow, when we stand in front of everyone, I am making a vow to be your absolute safe harbor. No more secrets. No more manipulation. Just us, facing the world entirely together."

"I am completely ready," I whispered, resting my head against his broad shoulder.
We sat there in the quiet, dim kitchen for another hour, just holding each other in the peaceful stillness. We didn't need grand gestures or dramatic declarations. The quiet, unshakeable certainty of our love was more than enough.
