Chapter 58 - The Cover Design

|
Securing the publishing deal with a massive imprint was a surreal whirlwind, but the reality of the book truly hit me when the preliminary cover designs arrived in my inbox. I sat in my clinic office after hours, the soft glow of my desk lamp illuminating the quiet room as I opened the PDF file from my new editor, Chloe.
The first few mockups were beautiful but entirely wrong for the message I was trying to convey. They featured dark, moody colors—deep blues, grays, and stark black text. One showed a silhouette of a woman standing in a shadow, looking downcast. Another featured shattered glass scattered across a cold floor.
They were marketing the trauma. They wanted to sell the tragedy of what Daniel had done to me.
I immediately picked up my phone and dialed Chloe's direct line.
"Hi Rachel! Did you get the design concepts?" Chloe asked brightly.
"I did, Chloe. And the artists are incredibly talented, but we need to completely change the visual direction," I said firmly, my voice leaving no room for negotiation.
"Oh? What were you thinking? We thought the shattered glass really captured the emotional devastation of financial abuse."
"I don't want to capture the devastation," I explained, looking around my beautiful, thriving clinic. "I want to capture the resurrection. This book is a survival guide. It is a roadmap out of hell. If a terrified woman sees this book on a shelf, I don't want her to see a reflection of her current despair. I want her to see a promise of her future strength."
"Okay, I love that," Chloe said, the sound of furious typing echoing on her end. "What is your vision?"
"Kintsugi," I said without hesitation. "The Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with pure gold. The philosophy is that the breakage and the repair are part of the object's history, rather than something to disguise. I want the cover to be bright, elegant, and woven with striking veins of gold. I want the scars to be the most beautiful, valuable part of the design."

"Rachel, that is absolutely brilliant," Chloe breathed. "I am sending this note to the art department right now. We are pivoting to gold."
I hung up the phone with a profound sense of satisfaction. I was no longer a shattered piece of glass swept into a corner. I was mended with gold, stronger at the broken places, and entirely in control of how the world would perceive my healing.
