Chapter 43 - The Dress Fitting

The exclusive bridal boutique downtown smelled beautifully of fresh white roses and expensive vanilla candles. The walls were lined with breathtaking gowns made of the finest silk, lace, and tulle. I stood nervously on the circular pedestal in the fitting room, surrounded by massive, floor-to-ceiling mirrors.
"Okay, Mom, are you ready?" Sophie called out from the plush velvet seating area outside the curtain.
"I think so," I replied, smoothing my hands nervously down the front of the gown.
The bridal consultant pulled the heavy velvet curtains back with a dramatic flourish. I stepped out, holding my breath.
I was wearing a remarkably simple, incredibly elegant ivory silk gown. It didn't have any massive, heavy beads or elaborate, flashy lace. It was sleek, sophisticated, and completely timeless. It was the exact opposite of the massive, ostentatious, restrictive ballgown Daniel had explicitly forced me to wear during our deeply miserable, highly publicized wedding decades ago.
Sophie gasped, her hands instantly flying to cover her mouth. Tears immediately welled up in her bright eyes.
"Mom," she whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "You look absolutely stunning. It’s perfect."
"You really think so?" I asked, turning slightly to look at my reflection in the mirror. I didn't see a broken, timid woman anymore. I saw a radiant, confident bride.
"I know so," Sophie said, standing up and walking over to gently hold my hands.
"I just wish Caroline could be here to see you graduate, and to see all of this," I said softly, a bittersweet ache blooming in my chest.

"She is here," Sophie smiled brightly, a single tear slipping down her cheek. "She’s the one who made sure we survived long enough to find you. And she would absolutely love this dress."
I pulled my incredible stepdaughter into a tight, tearful embrace, surrounded by the beautiful white silk, knowing in my heart that Caroline was indeed watching over us, entirely at peace.
