Chapter 18 - A Ghost in the Financial World|

The rundown diner on 4th and Elm was a forgotten relic of the 1950s, complete with faded, cracked red vinyl booths, flickering neon signs, and the persistent, heavy smell of stale black coffee and fried grease. I arrived a full ten minutes early, sliding cautiously into a back corner booth that offered a clear, unobstructed view of both the front entrance and the swinging kitchen exit doors. I hadn't survived Daniel's twisted psychological warfare by being naive or careless; I had my phone unlocked and resting face-up on the sticky table, my thumb hovering nervously over the emergency dial button.
At exactly noon, a tall, imposing man in a perfectly tailored charcoal overcoat walked through the smudged glass doors. He had sharp, highly analytical features, piercing blue eyes, and a distinguished streak of silver in his dark hair. He systematically scanned the crowded room, locked eyes directly with me, and walked purposefully over to my booth.
"Rachel," he said, sliding smoothly into the seat opposite me, completely unbothered by the grime. "Thank you for coming. I'm Julian."
"Skip the polite pleasantries, Julian," I said, leaning forward and keeping my voice dangerously low. "Tell me exactly who this Elias Thorne is and why he insanely thinks I have his fifty million dollars."
Julian calmly signaled the tired waitress for a cup of black coffee before leaning forward, keeping both of his hands clearly visible on the tabletop.
"Elias Thorne is an absolute ghost in the legitimate financial world, but a very real, incredibly violent monster in the criminal underworld," Julian explained quietly, his eyes constantly checking the door. "He uses complex, legitimate corporate structures to wash illicit cartel funds. Richard Bennett was one of his best, most reliable washers for over a decade. But when the company started failing, Richard got desperate. He stupidly started skimming millions from Thorne's accounts to keep his own luxurious empire afloat."
"And Caroline found out," I realized with a sickening jolt, the missing pieces of the puzzle finally clicking into place.
"Exactly," Julian nodded grimly. "Caroline found the massive discrepancy during her own investigation. She realized Richard was going to drag the whole family down, so she immediately secured the clean company assets—the twenty-five million—for Ethan and Sophie. But she also found the damning records of the fifty million Richard stole from Thorne. She hid those records, and the remaining stolen cash, right before she died."

"But Daniel and Richard never found it during all their searching?" I asked.
"No. They foolishly thought you had it all along. And now, Thorne thinks you have it, too. He believes you used a portion of it to secretly fund your new heart clinic," Julian took a slow sip of his black coffee. "Thorne isn't a man who sues people in civil court, Rachel. He’s a man who makes people permanently disappear. You need to find whatever Caroline left behind before Thorne finds you."
