Chapter 9 - The Security Footage

My father cleared his throat, trying to puff out his chest.
"She was disrespecting her mother,"
My father stated, attempting to justify the assault.
"She needed to learn a lesson."
"You assaulted a heavily pregnant woman,"
Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping another octave.
"Your own daughter. In front of two hundred witnesses."
He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his cell phone.
"Now, Daniel, let's not blow this out of proportion,"
My mother interjected, deploying her usual, manipulative diplomatic tone.
"It was just an accident. She leaned back too far. Don't make a scene."
"I have already seen the security footage,"
Daniel said coldly, raising a finger and pointing directly at the discreet black dome cameras mounted in the corners of the ballroom ceiling.
"The hotel manager showed me the feed in the lobby as I was running back inside. I saw the heel on her foot. I saw the kick to the chair. Every single second is recorded in high definition from three different angles."
My mother’s face instantly drained of all color, turning a sickly, ashen gray. My father’s rigid, defensive posture suddenly faltered.
"Monica's husband just brought the paramedics through the service elevators,"

Daniel continued, not breaking eye contact with my parents.
"I am going to the hospital with my wife. But the police are walking through those front doors right now."
