Chapter 10 - The Arrest

Daniel turned back to me as two paramedics rushed through the crowd, carrying a collapsed stretcher and a massive trauma bag.
"They are not leaving this room,"
Daniel promised me, holding my hand tightly as the medics began checking my vitals.
"The baby,"
I sobbed, the pain of the contractions blurring my vision.
"Just make sure the baby is safe."
"They have a neonatal unit standing by,"
Daniel reassured me, his voice softening infinitely as he spoke to me.
As the paramedics carefully lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw two uniformed police officers enter the ballroom. Daniel intercepted them briefly, handing them a card with his federal prosecutor credentials and pointing directly at my parents.
As the medics wheeled me rapidly toward the exit, I heard my mother’s voice rising in a hysterical panic.
"This is completely unnecessary!"
My mother shrieked at the officers.
"We did absolutely nothing wrong! She is fine!"
"Ma'am, we have multiple eyewitnesses and video evidence of felony assault on a pregnant woman,"
The older officer replied, his voice firm and professional.

The last thing I saw before the ballroom doors swung shut was my father being roughly pushed against the banquet table, the harsh, metallic click of steel handcuffs echoing over the silence of the horrified wedding guests.
