Chapter 16 - The Trial

Six months later, after Clare had finally been brought home, healthy and thriving, the criminal trial commenced.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Daniel's hand, while my parents sat at the defense table.
My mother looked haggard, her perfect posture broken, the stress of the impending prison sentence completely eroding her arrogant facade. My father stared blankly at the judge, devoid of any visible emotion.
The prosecution was ruthless and methodical.
They played the video. They displayed the text messages. They called the horrified wedding guests to the stand, who testified to the absolute, unprovoked violence of the attack.
But the most devastating testimony came from Olivia.
She took the stand, her pregnant belly clearly visible under her dress. She spoke calmly, clearly detailing the decades of psychological manipulation and the specific events of the wedding night.
"I am not testifying out of hatred,"

Olivia told the jury, her voice ringing clear across the silent courtroom.
"I am testifying because my sister nearly died, and my niece was forced to fight for her life in an incubator, simply because two adults couldn't control their own pathetic rage. They need to be held accountable."
