Chapter 5 - The Fall

Tears of sheer physical agony pricked the corners of my eyes.

But as the pain subsided into a dull throb, something deep within my soul finally snapped. Decades of swallowing my discomfort, decades of prioritizing her narcissistic demands over my own basic human needs, violently collided with the reality of the fragile life growing inside me.

This baby deserved a mother who could stand up for herself.

I violently yanked my foot out from under her heel and sat up perfectly straight, gripping the armrests of my chair.

"No,"

I stated, my voice ringing with an absolute, unshakeable finality.

"I am staying right here."

My mother’s face flushed a violent, ugly shade of crimson beneath her expensive makeup. She slowly stood up straight and locked eyes with my father. A silent, terrifying communication passed between them—a toxic dynamic I had witnessed my entire life.

My father was standing directly behind my chair. He remained silent, fully complicit, stepping into the role of her enforcer as he always did.

The air in the room suddenly felt incredibly dense, suffocatingly heavy.

The events that followed took only a few seconds, but they are burned into my memory in agonizing slow motion.

My father took a deliberate half-step forward. I felt the sudden, aggressive shift in his energy right behind my shoulders.

Before I could even turn my head, his heavy dress shoe slammed violently into the back legs of my banquet chair.

It was a sharp, brutal kick.

The chair instantly tilted backward. I threw my arms out, desperately clawing at the edge of the table, but my center of gravity had been severely altered by the pregnancy. The momentum was completely unstoppable.

The chair tipped past the point of no return.
