Chapter 18 - The Boundary

My parents served thirteen months of their sentence before being released on good behavior.

The day they were released, they had their new attorney send a formal letter to our house, requesting a supervised visitation with Clare.

Daniel and I sat at the kitchen table, reading the letter.

"They haven't changed,"

Daniel noted, tossing the letter onto the counter.

"They still think they are entitled to our lives."

"They aren't,"

I replied smoothly.

We drafted a simple, one-paragraph response through our own legal counsel, stating that under absolutely no circumstances would they ever be permitted to contact me, Daniel, or Clare again.

If they breached the boundary, we would immediately file for a permanent restraining order.

Some of my extended family members called me harsh. They preached about forgiveness and Christian duty.

I simply hung up the phone. Forgiveness did not require me to sacrifice the safety of my child, and I refused to let the cycle of abuse infect another generation.
