Chapter 2 - The Edge of the Abyss

The cold rain instantly soaked her dark hair, plastering it against her pale face.

She walked slowly along the stone pathway that bordered the deep, glowing blue water of the massive swimming pool.

She just wanted to leave.

She did not care about the Montenegro fortune. She had absolutely no desire to fight for a share of the inheritance, nor did she care about the vast, sprawling corporate empire her husband’s family controlled.

She only wanted to protect her unborn son from the poisonous, toxic environment that was suffocating them both.

Suddenly, a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the sound of the crashing rain.

"I knew you would try to find a way to escape,"

The voice stated coldly.

Valeria froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She slowly turned around.

Standing a few feet away, holding a large, black umbrella, was Teresa.

Her mother-in-law.

Teresa was a woman carved from ice and old money. She wore a tailored designer suit, her posture rigidly perfect, her eyes filled with an absolute, unyielding hatred. She was the matriarch of the family, and a woman who had never, not even for a single second, accepted Valeria or the pregnancy.

"I just needed some air,"

Valeria whispered, her voice trembling slightly against the cold.

Teresa slowly closed her umbrella, letting the rain soak her expensive clothes, completely indifferent to the storm.

She took a deliberate, predatory step forward.
