Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The rain fell relentlessly against the sprawling, imposing stone walls of the Montenegro estate.

It was a torrential, angry downpour that seemed entirely fitting for the suffocating atmosphere inside the house. The formal family dinner, a monthly obligation disguised as an intimate gathering, had mercifully concluded an hour ago.

The elite guests, a mix of wealthy business partners and high-society friends, lingered comfortably inside the grand main hall. They stood beneath massive crystal chandeliers, swirling expensive red wine in delicate crystal glasses.

The soft, melodic sound of a string quartet completely masked the toxic, venomous reality of the Montenegro family. The polite laughter echoing off the marble floors successfully hid decades of meticulously constructed lies, bitter resentments, and absolute paranoia.

Valeria stood near the heavy glass doors overlooking the massive back gardens, watching the rain hammer the surface of the illuminated outdoor swimming pool.

She was seven months pregnant, wearing a simple, elegant dark maternity dress that sharply contrasted with the extravagant, jewel-encrusted gowns worn by the other women in the room.

She felt completely alone in a room full of people.

Valeria rested one hand protectively over her swollen stomach, feeling a gentle, comforting kick from the life growing inside her. With her other hand, she unconsciously traced the delicate silver chain of a small, antique locket she wore around her neck. It was a piece of jewelry she absolutely never took off.

The air in the grand hall was thick and suffocating. She couldn't breathe.

Valeria slowly pushed the heavy glass doors open, stepping out into the freezing, torrential rain, desperately seeking a single moment of peace.
