Chapter 15 - The Hospital Room

The sterile, bright lights of the hospital maternity ward were a stark contrast to the dark, stormy night at the estate.
Valeria lay in the mechanical bed, hooked up to fetal monitors and a warm IV drip. The rhythmic, steady, beautiful sound of her baby’s heartbeat echoed from the machine, confirming that the child had miraculously survived the horrific plunge into the pool.
Daniel sat in a heavy plastic chair right beside the bed, his head resting in his hands, completely exhausted.
"He is strong,"
Daniel murmured, looking up at the monitor.
"He is a fighter,"
Valeria agreed softly, resting her hand on her stomach.
"The police called,"
May you like
Daniel said quietly, refusing to meet her eyes, utterly ashamed of his family.
"They raided the doctor's clinic an hour ago. He confessed to the entire bribery scheme to avoid a longer prison sentence. My mother is being held without bail for attempted murder and conspiracy."
