Chapter 24 - A Ghost at the Iron Gate

Later that afternoon, Beatriz was reviewing a merger contract in her corner office when her private intercom buzzed.

"Ms. Monteiro, I apologize for the interruption,"

Her executive assistant, Clara, spoke, her voice laced with tension.

"What is it, Clara?"

Beatriz asked without looking up from her papers.

"Security from your private estate just called. There is a man at the front gates demanding entry. He is causing quite a scene and refuses to leave."

Beatriz’s pen stopped moving.

"Did they identify him?"

She asked, though she already felt the chilling certainty in her bones.

"Yes, ma'am. It is your ex-husband. Eduardo."

A heavy silence filled the spacious office. Beatriz slowly placed her pen down on the desk. She felt a brief, microscopic flutter of the old anxiety in her chest, but she crushed it instantly, replacing it with burning, righteous anger.

"Tell the estate security to keep the gates locked. Do not call the police yet. I am heading home right now. I will deal with him personally."

She grabbed her coat and walked out of the office. She was not going to hide behind guards or lawyers today. Eduardo needed to look her in the eyes and understand, once and for all, that the woman he had abused and tried to destroy was dead and buried.
