Chapter 14 - The Begging

It didn't take long for the reality of their situation to break through Rodrigo's stubborn pride. Three days after Beatriz left, the intercom at the front gates of the Monteiro estate buzzed.

Beatriz watched the security camera feed from the monitor in the study. Rodrigo stood in the pouring rain, looking disheveled, pathetic, and desperate. His designer suit was soaked, his hair plastered to his forehead.

"Beatriz, please! I know you're in there!"

His voice crackled through the speaker, frantic and pleading.

"I'm sorry! I was a fool! I love you, I love Leo! Please, just let me in so we can talk. They're taking the house, Beatriz! They're taking everything!"

She stared at the screen, feeling an absolute detachment. This was the man who had called her useless, who had watched his mother torment her while he drank his scotch.

She pressed the intercom button. Her voice echoed out into the rain, cold and imperious.

"The man I married was an illusion. The man standing at my gates is a stranger. Speak to my lawyers, Rodrigo. Do not come here again."

She released the button and turned off the monitor, leaving him to scream into the storm.
