Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the sprawling, opulent living room, sharp and violent enough to momentarily drown out the desperate wails of the infant. A crystal vase, once a centerpiece of the mahogany table, now lay in jagged ruins across the imported Persian rug. Beside it, a puddle of warm baby formula seeped into the expensive fibers, a stark white stain against the deep crimson of the wool.
Beatriz stood in the center of the destruction, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her arms were wrapped fiercely around her six-month-old son, Leo, pressing his small, trembling body against her chest. She swayed slightly, an instinctual soothing motion for the child, even as her own world threatened to collapse.
"Look at what you've done! You clumsy, useless woman!"
Eleanor, her mother-in-law, sneered from the velvet armchair. The older woman didn't even bother to stand, her posture practically oozing disdain as she casually adjusted her diamond necklace.
"I was trying to feed him,"
Beatriz whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of exhaustion.
"He was crying, and Rodrigo bumped into me—"
"Oh, so now it is my fault?"
Rodrigo stepped forward, his handsome face twisted into a grotesque mask of irritation. He held a half-empty glass of scotch, the ice clinking loudly in the tense silence.
"You are the one who can't even hold a damn bottle straight. My mother is right, Beatriz. You are pathetic. Sometimes I wonder why I even brought you into this house."

Beatriz closed her eyes, a single, hot tear escaping and tracing a path down her pale cheek. This was not a new script. The humiliation, the gaslighting, the constant reminders that she was supposedly a charity case—it had been her daily reality for over two years. They believed she was a penniless orphan, a naive girl who had won the lottery by marrying into their "prestigious" family.
They had no idea who she really was.
