Chapter 9 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

"You cannot be back here, ma'am," the massive private security guard stated, holding his hand up to physically block Odette Kingsley from walking any further down the PICU corridor.
"Do you have any idea who I am?" Odette demanded, her voice echoing shrilly in the quiet hospital wing. "I am Odette Kingsley. I pay the salary of the man who hired you. Step aside immediately."
"My orders come directly from Mr. Felix Kingsley," the guard replied, completely unfazed by her billionaire status. "And you are explicitly on the restricted list."
The door to Lily’s room opened, and Felix stepped out into the hallway. He closed the door quietly behind him, ensuring Sarah and Lily were shielded from the impending storm.
"Let her through, Marcus," Felix ordered calmly.
The guard stepped aside, and Odette marched forward, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her designer coat immaculate. She looked entirely out of place amidst the beeping monitors and the scent of antiseptic.
"Have you completely lost your mind, Felix?" Odette hissed, keeping her voice low but laced with venom. "You abandoned a billion-dollar merger, you turned your phone off, and you have essentially barricaded yourself in a hospital with a woman who is actively trying to extort us!"
"Sarah is not extorting anyone, Mother," Felix said, his voice deadly quiet. "She came to claim what is rightfully hers. And this child is my daughter."
"That is a matter for the lawyers and DNA labs to figure out in a controlled environment!" Odette countered aggressively. "Not a reason to tank our stock price. You need to leave this hospital right now, come back to the office, and issue a public statement."
"I am not leaving," Felix stated with absolute finality.
"If you do not walk out of this hospital with me right now, the board will strip you of your title," Odette threatened, her eyes flashing. "You will lose the empire, Felix."
Felix laughed, a dark, humorless sound that genuinely unsettled his mother.
"You still don't get it, do you?" Felix asked, taking a step closer to her. "Celeste poisoned my daughter today. She sent a lethal allergen to a six-year-old girl to stop a board meeting. And you are here worried about stock prices."
Odette blanched but quickly recovered her cold composure. "Celeste’s actions are her own. The company must survive."
"The company is dead to me," Felix whispered fiercely. "And if you ever come near this floor, or Sarah, or my daughter again, I will personally ensure that you spend your golden years in a federal prison cell for complicity. Get out of my sight."

Odette stared at her son, realizing for the first time in his life, she had completely lost control of him. She turned on her heel and walked away, the sharp click of her heels echoing like a death knell.
