Chapter 11 - The Night Watch
The hospital grew quiet as the deep hours of the night settled over the city. The chaotic frenzy of the daytime shift was replaced by the hushed, methodical routines of the night nurses.
Inside Room 4, the only illumination came from the soft, glowing screens of Lily’s medical monitors and a small reading lamp in the corner. Sarah sat curled in the uncomfortable recliner, her exhaustion finally overpowering her adrenaline. She was dozing fitfully, her hand still resting lightly on the edge of Lily’s mattress.
Felix had refused to sit down. He stood near the window, staring out at the sparkling lights of Manhattan, his mind racing with a million different strategies on how to dismantle Celeste Arden’s life.
He turned and looked at Sarah. Even in the dim light, with tear tracks staining her cheeks and dark circles under her eyes, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever known. He remembered the fierce, brilliant chef she had been seven years ago. He remembered the night they had created the signature dessert that would later make the Kingsley group billions—the recipe Celeste had callously stolen and claimed as her own.
He walked over quietly and draped his suit jacket over Sarah’s sleeping shoulders to keep her warm.
"I'm sorry," Felix whispered softly into the quiet room, making a vow to a sleeping woman who couldn't hear him. "I was a fool to let my mother drive you away. I will spend the rest of my life making this right. For you, and for her."
He looked down at Lily. She looked so incredibly fragile, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically under the thin hospital blanket. He gently brushed a stray curl from her forehead, his heart swelling with a fierce, protective love he had never known he was capable of possessing.
A soft knock on the door broke the silence.
A nurse wearing light blue scrubs and a surgical mask stepped quietly into the room, holding a small metal tray with a syringe.
"Just here to push her scheduled antibiotics and check her vitals, Mr. Kingsley," the nurse whispered, keeping her head down to avoid waking Sarah.
"Go ahead," Felix nodded, stepping back to give her room, assuming she was just another part of the hospital's endless routine.
