Chapter 38 - The Broken Crown"Felix! Stay back!" Celeste shrieked, her hand trembling violently as she held the pistol against the sobbing flight attendant's temple.

Felix didn't stop. He walked at a steady, measured pace until he was standing just ten feet away from the base of the metal stairs. He looked up at Celeste, his expression completely devoid of fear, anger, or pity. He just looked bored.
"It's over, Celeste," Felix said, his voice carrying clearly over the idling engines of the jet. "Julian is in custody. My mother is dead. The offshore accounts are frozen. There is nowhere left to run."
"I have the key!" Celeste screamed, waving her hand toward the briefcase. "I have a billion dollars waiting for me! I won! I finally beat you and Sarah!"
"You didn't beat anyone," Felix replied coldly. "You spent five years in a federal cell dreaming of a victory that doesn't exist. If you pull that trigger, you won't be going back to a minimum-security white-collar prison. You will go to a supermax facility for the rest of your natural life. No parole. No appeals. Just a concrete box."
Celeste’s breath came in ragged, hysterical gasps. She looked at the terrified girl in her arms, then at the dozens of laser sights painting her chest red.
"Sarah took everything from me," Celeste sobbed, the gun wavering. "She was just a chef! She was nobody! I was supposed to be the queen of the Kingsley empire!"
"There is no empire," Felix said softly. "It was an illusion, Celeste. It was just numbers on a screen and a whole lot of misery. Put the gun down. Save whatever little shred of humanity you have left."
For ten agonizing seconds, the tarmac was completely silent except for the wind.
Celeste looked down at Felix, her eyes utterly broken. The grand delusion she had built her entire life upon finally shattered. She released the flight attendant, who scrambled down the stairs into the arms of the FBI agents.
Celeste let the gun slip from her fingers. It clattered against the metal stairs.
She collapsed to her knees, burying her face in her hands, weeping as the federal agents rushed up the stairs and slammed the heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. The nightmare that had haunted the Kingsley family for years was finally over.

Felix turned his back on her and walked into the fog, ready to go home.
