Chapter 23 - A Taste of PoisonSarah wiped the sweat from her brow, stepping back to admire the bustling chaos of Marlowe House’s flagship kitchen. It was a Friday night, and the restaurant was booked solid with A-list celebrities, senators, and food critics. Her culinary foundation’s annual gala was only weeks away, and everything had to be perfect.

"Chef Sarah, the truffle risotto is ready for table four," her sous-chef, Marco, called out, plating the dish with practiced precision.

"Looks beautiful, Marco. Send it out," Sarah smiled, wiping her hands on her apron.

She walked into the dining room, enjoying the hum of satisfied guests and the clinking of crystal glasses. This was her kingdom. She had built it on honesty, hard work, and unyielding passion.

Suddenly, a sharp crash shattered the elegant ambiance.

Sarah whipped her head around. A wealthy socialite at table twelve had collapsed sideways, pulling the linen tablecloth down with her. Plates shattered across the hardwood floor. The woman’s husband was shouting, his face pale with panic.

"Call 911!" Sarah yelled, sprinting across the dining room and dropping to her knees beside the gasping woman. "Ma'am? Ma'am, can you hear me?"

The woman was clutching her throat, her lips turning a faint shade of blue. It wasn't choking—it was a severe, violent allergic reaction.

"She has a severe peanut allergy!" the husband screamed. "We told your staff! We told the waiter!"

"There are no peanuts in that dish," Sarah said, her heart hammering against her ribs. "We run a strict allergen-free prep station. It's impossible."

Within minutes, paramedics swarmed the restaurant, loading the woman onto a stretcher and rushing her out the front doors as cameras from passing paparazzi flashed wildly. The dining room emptied in a panic, guests leaving full plates and throwing cash on the tables.

Sarah stood in the center of her ruined restaurant, her hands trembling.

The health inspector arrived less than an hour later, demanding full access to her pantry. When the inspector emerged from the back, he held up a commercial-grade container of peanut oil, entirely unlabeled, that had been deliberately swapped with their standard olive oil reserve.

"This is gross negligence, Ms. Marlowe," the inspector said grimly. "I have no choice but to shut down this location pending a full federal health investigation. Your license is suspended."

Sarah stared at the container. She personally checked the inventory every morning. That oil had not been there at 8:00 AM.

As she walked out the back alley to get some air, her phone buzzed. It was an unknown number.

Did you enjoy the appetizer? The main course is coming. — C.A.

Sarah gripped the brick wall of the alley to steady herself. Celeste Arden was back, and she was coming for everything Sarah loved.
