Chapter 12 - Code Blue

The nurse moved with practiced efficiency. She checked the readings on the glowing monitors, adjusting a few dials before turning her attention to the IV line taped securely to Lily’s small arm.

Felix watched her, his mind still half-focused on the legal war waiting for him at dawn. But as the nurse picked up the syringe from the metal tray, something caught his sharp, detail-oriented eye. Her hands were shaking. Not a slight tremor, but a violent, nervous shaking that caused the liquid inside the plastic barrel to tremble.

Hospital nurses in the PICU did not shake. They were veterans of chaos.

"What exactly are you pushing into her line?" Felix asked, his voice suddenly sharp, stepping closer to the bed.

The nurse froze, her eyes darting nervously toward the door. "It's... it's just her scheduled antibiotics, sir. Doctor's orders."

She hurriedly moved to uncap the IV port, her movements clumsy and desperate.

"Stop," Felix commanded, his instincts screaming at him. He reached out and grabbed her wrist firmly before she could inject the fluid. "Show me the chart. I want to see the doctor's order."

"Let go of me!" the nurse hissed, panicking. She violently jerked her arm away, the syringe slipping from her grasp and clattering onto the hard linoleum floor.

In her desperate attempt to flee, she accidentally yanked the IV line hard, dislodging the needle from Lily’s arm. Blood immediately began to pool on the white sheets.

Lily’s eyes flew open, and she let out a weak, terrifying gasp of pain. The sudden trauma to her fragile system triggered an immediate, catastrophic response.

The heart monitor, which had been beeping in a steady, reassuring rhythm, suddenly spiked into a frantic, erratic screech.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

Sarah bolted awake, the blanket falling to the floor. She screamed as she saw the blood on the sheets and the chaotic numbers flashing red on the monitor.

"Lily! What's happening?!" Sarah shrieked, lunging toward the bed.

"Code Blue! Room 4! Code Blue!" a voice blared over the hospital intercom system.

The fake nurse didn't wait. She bolted for the door, shoving past a stunned Sarah.

Felix didn't hesitate. He looked at the chaos unfolding around his daughter, realizing with absolute, horrifying clarity that Celeste hadn't just sent a poisoned cupcake. She had sent a killer into the very room where his child was sleeping.

"Save her!" Felix roared at the team of doctors who came sprinting through the door with a crash cart, before turning and sprinting down the hallway after the fleeing nurse.
