Chapter 34 - The Mother's FallWhile Julian Sterling was being dragged out of the Hamptons estate in handcuffs by local police and federal marshals, Odette Kingsley was facing her own reckoning in a bleak, fluorescent-lit interrogation room at the FBI field office in Manhattan.

For the first time in her life, Odette looked her age. The pristine makeup had faded, her designer gown was wrinkled, and the heavy diamond earrings felt like physical weights dragging her down.
A federal prosecutor walked into the room, tossing a thick file onto the metal table.
"Good morning, Mrs. Kingsley," the prosecutor said dryly. "I hope you slept well. We have spent the night reviewing your financial portfolios."
"I want my lawyer," Odette snapped, attempting to summon her old aristocratic arrogance, though her voice shook.
"Your lawyer resigned three hours ago when your retainer checks bounced," the prosecutor replied, pulling a document from the folder. "It seems your partner, Julian Sterling, wasn't very honest with you. He didn't just lock you out of the Kingsley accounts. Before he went bankrupt yesterday, he quietly siphoned your entire private trust into an offshore shell company to cover his own margins."
Odette stared at the man, uncomprehending. "What do you mean, he siphoned my trust? I am worth eight hundred million dollars."
"You are currently worth negative four million dollars in outstanding credit debt," the prosecutor corrected without a shred of pity. "Your brownstones are being seized. Your accounts are frozen. Julian Sterling left you penniless to take the fall for the corporate sabotage he orchestrated at Marlowe House."
The words hit Odette like physical blows. The empire she had fought so ruthlessly to control, the family she had alienated, the son she had betrayed—all for absolutely nothing. She had handed her legacy to a vulture, and the vulture had picked her bones clean.
A sudden, sharp pain radiated up her left arm.
Odette gasped, clutching her chest. The room began to spin violently. The fluorescent lights blurred into blinding white streaks.
"Mrs. Kingsley?" the prosecutor asked, stepping forward, his tone shifting from adversarial to alarmed. "Are you alright?"
May you like
Odette tried to speak, but her jaw felt numb. She reached out, grasping the edge of the metal table before her legs gave out completely. She collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, the sound of alarms and shouting agents fading into a distant, muffled echo as darkness swallowed her whole.
