Chapter 21 - The Shattered HorizonThe golden hour in the Hamptons was a sacred time for Sarah and Felix. The ocean breeze carried the salty tang of the sea, mingling seamlessly with the scent of roasted garlic and rosemary drifting from the outdoor kitchen. Lily’s laughter echoed along the shoreline, a sound that anchored Felix’s soul more firmly than any corporate acquisition ever had.

But peace, Felix knew all too well from his past life, was a fragile commodity.

As he kissed Sarah’s hand, his encrypted satellite phone—a heavy, matte-black relic from his ruthless corporate days that he kept solely for dire emergencies—vibrated violently against the wooden deck table.

He stared at the flashing red light. Only three people in the world had this specific number, and two of them were sitting on the beach right in front of him.

"Ignore it," Sarah whispered softly, her thumb gently tracing his jawline. "We left that cutthroat world behind, remember? Tonight is just for us."

"I have to check it, Sarah. Just in case it's the board," Felix said, his instincts flaring as he picked up the device. "Kingsley."

"Mr. Kingsley, it’s Vance. I’m incredibly sorry to interrupt your evening, sir." The voice of his head of corporate security was tight, laced with a dark urgency Felix hadn't heard in five years.

"What’s wrong, Vance?"

"It’s Celeste Arden, sir. She’s out."

Felix froze, the blood instantly draining from his face. "Excuse me? She was sentenced to twenty years in a federal penitentiary for corporate espionage and fraud. It hasn't even been five years."

"An appellate judge overturned the conviction three hours ago based on a sudden, undisclosed procedural error," Vance explained grimly, the sound of typing echoing in the background. "She walked out of the prison gates at exactly five p.m. today."

"How does a catastrophic procedural error suddenly appear after five years of silence?"

"She had new legal representation. The absolute best shadow fixers money can buy."

"Who funded it?" Felix demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal, icy whisper.

Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second. "The offshore wire transfers were heavily obfuscated through multiple shell companies, but my team traced the origin of the legal retainer. It came from a blind trust controlled entirely by your mother, Odette Kingsley."

Felix ended the call, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the phone. The perfect, warm summer evening suddenly felt freezing cold.

"Felix?" Sarah asked, her maternal instincts instantly flaring as she read his terrifying expression. "What is it?"

"My mother just bought Celeste Arden’s freedom," Felix said, his eyes locking onto Lily as she played in the surf. "The war isn't over. It was just waiting in the shadows."
