Chapter 27 - Unmasking the MoleThe industrial kitchen in Brooklyn was completely empty by midnight, save for Sarah and her head of internal logistics, a brilliant young auditor named Maya. They had spent the last six hours combing through inventory logs, security footage, and employee access records.

"Chef Sarah, you need to see this," Maya said, her eyes fixed on the glowing laptop screen. She rubbed her tired eyes. "I ran a deep cross-reference on the keycard swipes for the flagship restaurant’s pantry on the day of the poisoning."
Sarah walked over, resting her hands on the back of Maya’s chair. "Show me."
"The primary cameras in the hallway experienced a convenient three-minute blackout at 7:15 AM," Maya explained, tapping the screen. "But they forgot about the secondary backup camera in the loading dock. Look."
Maya pulled up grainy, black-and-white footage. It showed a figure in a chef’s coat slipping through the back door, carrying a nondescript commercial jug. The figure paused under the dim security light, looking back over their shoulder.
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat.
It was Marco. Her trusted sous-chef. The young man she had mentored for four years, the one whose culinary school debts she had quietly paid off when his mother fell ill.
"Marco?" Sarah whispered, a profound sense of betrayal twisting in her gut. "Are you absolutely sure?"
"I cross-referenced his bank accounts," Maya said grimly. "An offshore holding company wired two hundred thousand dollars into a newly opened account in his brother’s name three days ago. The holding company is registered to Vanguard."
Sarah didn't scream. She didn't cry. The shock quickly burned away, replaced by a cold, calculating fury that she had learned from watching Felix navigate the corporate underworld.
"Where is he right now?" Sarah asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
"He's prepping the morning dough in the basement bakery."
Sarah walked away from the laptop, grabbed a steel meat cleaver from the magnetic rack, and slammed it down onto the cutting board with a deafening THWACK, leaving it embedded deep in the wood. It was a message to herself—no more playing the victim.
She marched down the concrete stairs into the basement. Marco was standing by the massive industrial mixers, covered in flour. When he saw Sarah’s expression, the color drained from his face entirely.
"Chef Sarah," Marco stammered, taking a step back. "I... I thought you went home."
"Two hundred thousand dollars, Marco," Sarah said, crossing her arms. "Was that the price to destroy my life? To almost kill an innocent woman in my dining room?"
Marco collapsed to his knees, burying his face in his hands. "They told me no one would get hurt! They said it was just a mild allergen, just enough to cause a scene! Julian Sterling threatened to deport my family if I didn't take the money!"
Sarah stared down at the young man she had trusted like a son.
May you like
"Get up," Sarah commanded coldly. "You are going to help me destroy Julian Sterling, or I hand this footage over to the police right now, and you go to prison for attempted manslaughter."
