Chapter 35 - The Hospital ConfessionThe sterile smell of bleach and iodine in the cardiac intensive care unit always made Felix uneasy. He stood outside the glass room, watching the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of the heart monitor.

Odette Kingsley lay in the hospital bed, looking incredibly small and frail amidst the tangle of tubes and wires. She had suffered a severe myocardial infarction—a massive heart attack brought on by the shock of her financial ruin.
Sarah stood beside Felix, her hand resting gently on his back. Despite everything Odette had done to them, Sarah knew the complex, agonizing weight of family ties.
"You should go in," Sarah said softly. "The doctors said she might not have much time."
Felix took a deep breath, opened the heavy glass door, and stepped into the room.
Odette’s eyes fluttered open. She turned her head slowly, her gaze locking onto her son. For the first time in Felix’s memory, there was no hatred, no calculation, no bitter judgment in her eyes. There was only profound, devastating regret.
"Felix," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machines.
"I'm here, Mother," Felix said, stepping closer to the bed but keeping his distance.
Tears welled up in Odette’s eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. "He took everything. Julian... he took it all. The legacy. Your father's dream."
"Julian is in federal custody, Mother. He broke into my house last night. It's over."
Odette shook her head weakly. "No... Celeste. She has the vault. The safety deposit box in Geneva. The bearer bonds... Julian told me about them... a billion dollars in unregistered assets. She took the key."
Felix’s eyes narrowed. He knew Celeste had vanished, but he assumed she was running on fumes. If she had access to a billion dollars in untraceable bonds, she could rebuild her criminal empire anywhere in the world and come back to hunt them indefinitely.
"Where is the vault, Mother?" Felix asked urgently, leaning closer.
Odette took a ragged breath, her monitors beeping faster. She reached out with a trembling, frail hand, grabbing Felix’s wrist with surprising strength.
"Forgive me," Odette choked out, her eyes pleading desperately for absolution she knew she didn't deserve. "Please... I was so blind... forgive me."
Felix looked down at the woman who had caused him so much pain, who had tried to destroy his wife and take his daughter. He felt the anger drain out of him, leaving only pity.
"I forgive you, Mother," Felix whispered.
Odette let out a long, shuddering sigh. Her grip loosened, and her eyes fluttered shut. The steady beep of the heart monitor suddenly flatlined into a continuous, high-pitched scream.
May you like
Doctors rushed into the room, pushing Felix aside, but he already knew. Odette Kingsley was gone, taking the secrets of the empire with her.
